Even showed my precalc kids that earlier this year... I don't think more than a couple of them had made the connection. I think a lot of it has to do with the kids' maturity and their ability to connect what they know. Their level of comfort with a topic probably makes a difference, too - at this point, my Alg 2 kids are just worried about getting the problems correct and not about where the formula comes from.
